The Defense Logistics Agency (DLA) and its supply centers face numerous challenges in procuring castings for aging but capable and widely used military systems. Old technical data, broken supply chains, the inability to know whether a casting is contained in an NSN, diminishing sources, small quantity procurements, lost tooling, high costs, and poor quality all affect the ability of the supply centers to obtain spare parts to ensure the readiness of fielded weapon systems.

The American Metalcasting Consortium (AMC), integrates the nation’s top academic metalcasting researchers with the CAST-IT  team of metals experts and the four leading metalcasting industry associations and their members to solve supply chain management issues and advance DLA strategies in support of legacy weapon systems. Key members of the DoD logistics community are integrated throughout the AMC program to provide insight into DLA’s real world supply chain challenges. AMC is the only metalcasting consortium consisting of the dominant industry associations, their membership, and the premier metalcasting research universities in the United States.

The Castings for Improved Readiness Program is sponsored by the Defense Supply Center Philadelphia, Philadelphia, PA and the Defense Logistics Agency, Ft. Belvoir, VA.  AMC’s Castings for Improved Defense Readiness program is sponsored the Armaments Research and Development Engineering Center, Picatinny, NJ and Benet Laboratories, Watervliet, NY.
